In his jazz compositions Karel Van Marcke tends to combine several musical styles and compositional techniques. After two decades of jazz music, it brought Van Marcke to his ultimate passion: composing classical music. The Flemish radio station Klara acknowledges him as one of the current leading Belgian classical composers.
Concerto Continuo (2015) – Karel Van Marcke
The approach of combining styles and techniques paid off in 2000 and 2005 with the award of the composition prize BAP Sabam at the European Jazz Contest in Hoeilaart and in February 2004 he was guest composer at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels for the Belgian Jazz Composers’ Week.
He was musical director with music theatre pieces such as De Zotte Koning (the crazy king’) or Mijn Kapellekensbaan (my chapel road).
Recent years, he has been composing mainly classical music:
Karel Van Marcke has written music for
- the Eurostar London,
- Flemish Radio Orchestra,
- Concertgebouw Bruges,
- Luxemburg string quartet,
- Belgian Marine Orchestra,
- National Orchestra of Belgium soloists,
- Royal Conservatory in Brussels
- a piano solo concert tour
and many other different projects, from movies to music theatre.
Karel Van Marcke is a renowed arranger for classical composers, a.o. Luk Callens.

For several years he arranged the scores for Symfollies, a animated childrens’ television series that has been broadcast throughout the world.
The Symfollies project was born from the idea that classical music does not get the attention it deserves. So, a cartoon series was created to familiarize kids and their parents with classical music in a pleasant way.
